BBSRC NEEDL Enterprise and Entrepreneurship June 5th 2026

Following the tremendous success of NLD and DiMeN students in the Your Entrepreneurs Scheme (YES) competition, this enterprise training event will continue to provide an excellent opportunity for research students to learn how the commercialisation of research can lead to spin-outs and licensing agreements. This workshop has been a successful and enjoyable way for PhD students to engage with concepts around: Intellectual Property Rights, investment, Finance, Project Management, Teamworking and many other aspects that can be translated or developed from research into the commercial world. It is proposed to continue with what has been delivered for the previous three years to NLD students.

Facilitators

Matthew Wilcox and Peter Chater have led this enterprise training for the previous three years for NLD, they both completed the YES competition while they were PhD students at Newcastle University and have gone on to set up their own company, Aelius Biotech. They have now been joined by Anastassia Kostenko of the Newcastle University Business Development Team and Natalya Radko a lecturer in enterprise at Newcastle University Business School. Along with Richy Hetherington, Senior Lecturer in Bioscience Enterprise, this group of facilitators provide complementary options and security that availability is not an issue.

Audience and Timing

This workshop can be completed in one day but if the participants’ travel time is more than one hour to attend a cohort building residential stay is suggested. The events run between 10:30am and 5:30pm. This workshop would be appropriate for NLD, NEEDL cohorts, those students NEEDL collaborates with at Sunderland University, NWDP, PINZ and DiMeN cohorts and would be appropriate to open for limited PhD students from those host institutions. A maximum of 50 participants is suggested.
