ABOUT NEEDL

North East of England Doctoral Landscape Award

The NEEDL (North East of England Doctoral Landscape) Award is a five year programme to fund 100 PhD students to complete cutting edge research projects in the broader discipline areas of Bioscience and Biotechnology.

The vision is to train the next generation of scientists in technical and professional skills for diverse careers in modern, sustainable, biosciences in areas such as chemical biology, food security and neuroscience and ageing.

The studentships will include the, well-regarded Professional Internships for PhD Students (PIPS) programme, that allows research students to contextualise their research skills in an alternative working environment. Of significant importance to this geographically distinct partnership is a focus on widening participation. An innovative collaboration with The Brilliant Club will look to create mentoring opportunities for undergraduate students typically less likely to pursue a doctoral research degree, encouraging their applications and participation in future cohorts of NEEDL studentships.
