PIPS / Employer Engagement Day 27th February 2026

The NLD partnership has had excellent success with the BBSRC PIPS internship scheme with virtually all of the students taking up the opportunity to engage with the three-month Professional Internships for PhD Students (PIPS) scheme. The importance of demonstrating the range of Internships options and the experience of former interns and their hosts has been vital in encouraging engagement. This workshop has also proved a very useful exercise in helping students to reflect on the experience of research and consider their future careers. This may present an opportunity to develop this workshop further to create a broader opportunity for industry engagement that will be valuable to a broader community of PhD students.

Facilitators

Richy Hetherington the NLD and NEEDL training lead has ran this workshop with a variety of additional facilitators such as Dave Holmes of Bionow, Jenny Brady and Dan Allwood of Peak Writing. Depending on the audience this maybe an opportunity to engage further with industry partners to discuss skills and development requirements for PhD students in a broader context.

Audience and Timing

This workshop can be completed in one day but if the participants’ travel time is more than one hour to attend a cohort building residential stay is suggested. The events run between 10:30am and 5:30pm. This workshop would be appropriate for NEEDL cohorts, those students NEEDL collaborates with at Sunderland University, NWDP, PINZ cohorts and would be appropriate to open for limited PhD students from the institutions involved. A maximum of 50 participants is suggested.
