The first of several cohort building events takes place in October. Meeting in Newcastle’s Helix site an opportunity to hear about the exciting research projects about to be actualised will be a chance to meet the management board and ask any questions relating to the partnership and the programme for the coming years.
North East Postgraduate Conference (NEPG)
The largest student led conference is organised annually and will take place on November 4th this year. Typically several hundred research students will meet in person and virtually to discuss their research in Bioscience, Medical and Health Sciences. NEEDL is proud to sponsor this event, supporting and encouraging researchers from around the world to discuss their research findings and attend a variety of supportive workshops.
Internship (PIPS) / Industry liaison Event
In February there will be a chance to give some serious consideration as to how to maximise the opportunity of the internship, with a chance to meet prospective hosts and reflect on future potential career options.
Computational and Analytical Skills Development
Throughout year one an online programme of training in data analysis will be run by colleagues at Liverpool University. This will include training in the use of the popular programme language R.
Enterprise and Entrepreneurial Training
A teams of experts have been assembled to provide a bespoke and interactive training day, to develop researchers knowledge and experience of the commercialisation of research. Dr Matt Wilcox, Dr Peter Chater of Aelius Biotech. Ltd. and Dr Richy Hetherington a senior lecturer in Bioenterprise have developed an experiential training day based on their experience of the licencing, spinning out and Biotechnology SMEs. Students will build a team and conceptualise the process of taking research concepts to create a business.
Widening Participation Coaching Programme
Leadership and mentorship and critical elements for researchers whether this is roles within academia or in the broader working environment. With the help of the Brilliant Club, a unique programme has been devised to encourage the NEEDL research students to coach and mentor undergraduate students traditionally less likely to go on to doctoral study.
Writing retreat
There will be opportunities to develop academic writing skills with peer support and guidance from experts. To support the timely competition of annual reports, the thesis and academic papers.
Science Communication
With a focus on preparation for a range of public engagement and science communication events this training event will support researchers to improve their communication skills in a broad range on media, This will include support for entry to the national Three Minute Thesis competition.
Your Entrepreneurs Scheme
The nationally renoun YES competition will be open to all research students who would like to investigate the commercialisation and impact of research further. With tremendous success in this business planning competition for our partner institutions and previous Doctoral Partnership we anticipate future entries and success from NEEDL.
